When Someone Else Gets What You’ve Been Praying For

This week I watched someone receive what I’ve been longing for, and my heart held both—real joy for them, and a quiet ache for myself. Not one replacing the other, not one canceling the other… just both, at the same time.
And I’m learning that maybe this isn’t something to fix. Maybe it’s something God is gently shaping in me.
“Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” (Romans 12:15)
That kind of love doesn’t come naturally. At least not for me. Left to myself, it’s easier to compare, to withdraw, or to let disappointment take over. But God, in His kindness, keeps softening my heart—teaching me how to genuinely celebrate others, even when it costs me something.
Because real joy for someone else is a gift. It’s evidence of His Spirit at work. It’s Him loosening my grip on what I think my timeline should be and reminding me that His goodness isn’t limited. Someone else’s blessing doesn’t take anything away from what He has for me.
He is not absent in the waiting.
He is not unaware of what I’ve been praying for.
He is not late.
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted…” (Psalm 34:18)
Near enough to hold both the joy and the ache. Near enough to meet me in the tension instead of rushing me out of it.
Yesterday, my big sister shared the words, “the stronger the storm, the brighter the rainbow,” and it felt like a quiet reminder I needed. Because the rainbow has always been a sign of His faithfulness—not the absence of storms, but the promise that they don’t get the final word.
And if I’m honest, I’d still prefer the version of the story without the storm. But if God is using even this to grow something deeper in me—greater trust, a more genuine love for others, a heart that can hold both joy and longing—then I don’t want to miss what He’s doing here.
“The Lord is good to those who wait for him…” (Lamentations 3:25)
Waiting is not easy. But His goodness isn’t measured by how quickly He answers—it’s revealed in who He is, steady and unchanging through every season.
So today, I’m choosing to trust Him with both my joy and my longing.
To thank Him for the good I see in someone else’s life.
To be honest with Him about my own desire.
And to believe that He is still writing something good, even here.
God, You are faithful—in the storm, in the waiting, and in the promise that follows. And I will trust You here.
